Quite why this works is a puzzle, but it has something to do with credibility. Go off-grid, and you gain a bigger audience than you would do preaching on a street corner. Nearly two millennia ago, a group of Christian ascetics sometimes referred to as the desert fathers discovered an interesting trick: withdraw from society and, paradoxically, you gain social capital.
